About Our Discord
The Rochester Minnesota Bored Humans Association (RBHA or RMNBHA) is not a description of the city and area, but rather a collection of residents who go to public events together, organize private meetups, and socialize through the community Discord.
The RBHA was started in 2019 but didn't really find a wide-spread audience until Summer of 2020, where it helped connect residents during the divisive events that started a few months prior. Through these tumultuous times the members of the RBHA have forged friendships that were otherwise improbable and had positive impacts not only on each other, but the city as well.
Locations & Area
We are a Discord Community of residents from Rochester and the surrounding areas. Including (but not limited to) Kasson, Stewartville, Zumbrota, and even Austin.

Discussion
Our "Let's Talk" Category is where our general channels are. Below that you'll find categories for various topics, hobbies, and entertainment. Each category has multiple text chat channels for all.
Generic topics for each channel can be found at the top of the channel or when browsing the Channel list. There are also be threads for specific discussions such as: individual TV shows, recent movies, and parenting.
Local Activities
Folks will create meetups for events and activities going on around the area. These may range from get-togethers at public events such as the Riverside Concerts in Summer or trivia and karaoke event at a brewery to a more private event at an escape room or other business in the area.
Anyone can create a meetup for something they want to attend with other Discord members.
Common Questions
Why are we on Discord?
What makes us unique from Meetup.com, Facebook Groups, and other online communal spaces is that Discord provides the opportunity to interact in real time - through text chat or voice chat - with other humans. RBHA members engage in discussions, play a few games together in voice chat, and plan in person meetups.
Even if you have no interest in meeting folks in person, Discord is probably the closest you can come to interacting with other humans in South East Minnesota in a virtual setting.
Why should I join the Discord?
Discord is the platform on which the Rochester Bored Humans Association is built and is the heart of what has made the community flourish. Discord is where we meet, converse, and plan meetups with other residents and visitors in South East Minnesota.
What makes Rochester Discord better than local Meetup or Facebook Groups?
Discord facilitates the dialog between meetups much more fluidly than other platforms. You can have a conversation minutes before a meetup and then continue that conversation in person. The reverse is also true, you can continue a conversation online after you leave a meetup and others online can join in. Discord allows individuals to form friendships more naturally through live discussions than other platforms. If an individual befriends 2-3 others online, and notices those people going to a meetup, the individual may be more inclined to attend said meetup.
That said, the Rochester Discord isn't out to replace more niche groups. We still and encourage the creation and promote groups for specific interests and areas that would other be difficult for the Rochester Discord to fill. This allows individual communities to tailor the discussion to their area of focus more freely.
Is this a large group?
The discord has various channels that have a niche community of users; it's very easy to feel like you're in a smaller group of friends. Individuals have the freedom to participate in discussions across multiple channels allowing them to interact with as few, or as many people as they like. Most of the member made meetups get under 8 attendees as well. It won't even feel like the discord has 60 people who communicate on regular, weekly basis.
How do I access the RBHA Discord?
You can join the conversation from your web browser at the Discord website
From an app on your computer by downloading the desktop application from the Discord website
From a mobile device by downloading the app in your mobile devices respective app store.
Do I need a login for Discord?
You will need to create a free Discord account. If you don't have an account already you can create one when joining the RBHA server, or when opening up the desktop or mobile app for the first time.
Is there an age limit?
Yes, Discord requires that all users be 13 years and above or accompanied by a parent or guardian when online. The average age range of the Rochester Bored Humans Association is 25 to 35 years old.
We don't ask for an age when members join, but we discourage members under the age of 18 from attending meetups and have measures in place to prevent them from seeing meetups once we are aware of their age.
Is there a cost?
No. While Discord itself has various paid perks, called Nitro, the Rochester Bored Humans Association is free to join and participate with. Members who have Nitro do get added benefits on the RBHA server, such as being able to upload emojis to the server for everyone to use but no activities or core community features are locked behind a Nitro subscription.
Will there be a cost in the future?
While Discord does offer subscriptions for servers to implement, these are more geared towards communities around artists, gamers, developers, and other content creators who rely on the support of their fans for income. There is no need for a regional community to offer a subscription to it's members.
